Since humans first lifted their eyes to the sky, the moon was the most captivating and mysterious celestial body. It doesn't blaze like the sun nor hide like stars — it transforms, changes, disappears and returns in a regular cycle like breathing.

The Moon in Ancient Egypt

Ancient Egyptians knew the moon as the god "Khonsu" — the traveler of the sky and guardian of the night. The Egyptian calendar was lunar in origin before transitioning to solar for agricultural reasons tied to the Nile flood.

In Babylonian Civilization

The Babylonians were the first to track the lunar cycle with scientific precision — predicting solar and lunar eclipses long before they occurred. They developed sexagesimal (base-60) mathematics largely to model celestial movements.

In Islamic Civilization

The Hijri calendar is purely lunar — each month begins with the moon sighting and ends with the completion of its cycle. This calendar doesn't merely count days — it connects the Muslim to a cosmic rhythm. Ramadan travels through all seasons over 33 years, as if worship has no seasonal timetable but a cosmic lunar one.

The crescent in Islam answers a Quranic question: "They ask you about the new moons. Say: They are time markers for people and for the pilgrimage." (2:189)

Japan's Moon Celebration

In Japan, traditional culture celebrates "Tsukimi" — moon-viewing in autumn. Traditional round foods mimic the moon. The philosophy: contemplating the beauty of impermanence — for the moon waxes full then fades, like life itself.
