The Hijri Calendar: The Pulse of an Entire Civilization
Why did the calendar begin with the Migration, not the Birth? What history do the month names carry?
At the moment the crescent begins its monthly journey, millions of hearts around the world move with it. Ramadan begins, or ends. Eid is declared. The Hajj approaches or passes. The Hijri calendar is not merely a system for counting days — it is the pulse of an entire civilization.
The Beginning: A Migration That Changed History
The Hijri calendar doesn't begin from the moment of creation or the Prophet's birth ﷺ. During the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may God be pleased with him), a letter arrived saying: "Letters come from you without a date." He consulted the Companions. Ali ibn Abi Talib (may God be pleased with him) suggested the Migration as the starting point, and the Companions reached consensus.
Why the Migration? Because the Hijra wasn't merely a geographical movement — it was the founding moment of the organized Muslim community, the transition from individual faith to collective Islamic society.
The Month Names: A Book of History
- Muharram: From "prohibition" — the Arabs forbade warfare this month.
- Ramadan: From "ramda" — the scorching heat when it was named.
- Sha'ban: When tribes would scatter (sha'aba) in search of water.
- Dhul Hijjah: The month of Hajj and the ten blessed days.
- Rajab: From "forbearance" — another sacred month for peace.
- Rabi' al-Awwal: "First Spring" — named for when herds were taken to pasture.
The Mathematical Beauty of the Lunar Year
The Hijri year is 354 days — about 11 days shorter than the solar year. This means the Islamic calendar travels through all seasons over approximately 33 years. Ramadan comes in summer, then autumn, then winter, then spring — experiencing all of humanity's climatic realities in its worship, with no seasonal favoritism.
Calculating Hijri Dates: The Algorithm
The calculation algorithms used in Mawlidi are based on the mathematical Julian Day Number system — a continuous count of days from a fixed reference point. Converting Gregorian to Julian Day, then to Hijri, involves elegant mathematical formulas developed and refined over centuries of Islamic astronomical scholarship.
